A fortnight after the College Sport Wellington Regional Track and Field Championships, a contingent of Wellington athletes enjoyed a successful weekend at the North Island Secondary School meeting.

In warm, sunny conditions at Massey University Community Athletics Track in Palmerston North this past weekend, Wellington runners, jumpers and throwers won A healthy haul of medals. Many of these were gold – as detailed below.

Two Wellington athletes who recently competed at the CSW Regionals won double gold in individual events, these being St Pat’s Town’s Nelsson Tiumalu in the Intermediate Boys Discus and Shot Put and Hutt Valley High School’s Jacob Williams in the Junior Boys 1500m and 3000m.

Jacob Williams he said he was proud of his weekend’s performance. “I had a goal to get my PB in the 1500m, and I got that,” he told College Sport Wellington.

Wearing the yellow Wellington singlet (athletes were representing their regions not their schools), the year 9 runner streaked to victory in his 3000m race late on Saturday morning.

Jacob won by almost 20s, ahead of Auckland’s Kona Kelly  and St Pat’s Silverstream’s Blair Waldrom in third.

“I led most of the way and then with one and a half laps to go I pulled away and held on to win.”

His 3000m time was .002s off his PB – which he achieved at the recent CSW Regional meet at Newtown Park – so consistent performances.

Backing up 24 hours later, Jacob said he was feeling great with no ill-effects of the previous day when lining up at the start of his 1500m race.

The 1500m was more hotly contested “Kona [second place finisher] took the lead in the second to last lap, but with about 200m to go I came up on his shoulder and I gave it al I had.”

The 1500m is Jacob’s favoured event. “I like the 1500m more, because the 3000m is so long!”

If he sticks with it, he doesn’t have far to find inspiration, with recently retired champion New Zealand middle distance runner Nick Willis a past student at Hutt Valley High School.

These two races are the culmination of a busy summer on the track for Jacob, which also included the Wellington Championships and interclub athletics events. Jacob belongs to the Lower Hutt Athletics Club.

“My highlight from this season was breaking the record for the Junior Boys 1500m at the Wellington Championships.”

He is looking forward to the winter of cross country running and competing for his Hutt Valley Harriers club, and at the end of the year competing in his first New Zealand Secondary School Track and Field Championships.

He trains regularly, under coach Alastair Leslie.

In other notable results from CSW aligned Wellington athletes this past weekend, Paraparaumu College’s Luke Jarvis won the IB 100m in a photo finish.

Wellington College’s Toby Brook won the JB 800m in 2:08.43, with Jacob Rice from HIBS finishing third in the same final in 2:12.14.

Wellington College’s Joe Martin was an emphatic winner of the SB 800m and was a close second in his SB 1500m final. He was also in the team, along with SB Steeplechase winner Jaguun Gunregjev-Willers from St Pat's Town that won the SB 4x400m relay.

Alex Macbeth of Wellington College came second in the IB 800m in a time of 1:56.58, just behind Waikato/BoP winner Sam Ruthe - who’s winning time of 1:55.28 was a NISS meeting record.

Similarly, Queen Margaret College’s Poppy Healy won the SG 1500m and was second, right behind Waikato/BoP winner Holly Fausett in the 800m.

In the field, Wellington athletes won both the SB Boys and Girls Javelin.

Rebecca Bailey from St Oran’s College hurled the spear 38.76m to win her event, with WEGC’s Chelsey Moananu in third. St Pat’s Silverstream’s Keagan Sharkey won his SB javelin event by over 7m.

The IB Javelin was the final field event of the meet on Sunday, which was won by Layton Powell-Young of Scots College with a best throw of 49.97m ahead of second placed George Gray of Wellington College with a best hurl of 49.27m.

St Pat’s Silverstream’s Samisoni Hewitt and Scots College’s Hugo Jones were first and second in the SB High Jump, Hewitt clearing 2.00m and reversing their result in the regionals (with Jones jumping 2.03m there).

Analin Rudd of Marsden won the SG Triple Jump by 6cm with her sixth and final attempt.
