SERVICE TO SPORTS AWARDS

Congratulations to Ava Jones (Aotea College) and Ben Dunning (Onslow College) for winning the Pelorus Trust Service to School Sport award.

Ava Jones

During her time at the school, Ava made notable contributions to junior netball through the organisation of preseason sessions and her coaching involvement.  Additionally, she was a member of Senior A Netball team and involved with Surf Lifesaving.

This year Ava took on a leadership role, leading a group of senior students in coordinating and running a Kōtiro Participation Day for over 150 year 9 & 10 girls from nearby Porirua Colleges. The event was specifically designed for young women who had either not participated in school sports or were at risk of discontinuing their involvement, and provided them with a day of enjoyable and encouraging activities.  The goal was to inspire these young women to continue or reengage their involvement in sport and active recreation, a mission which Ava made a direct and significant contribution.

Ben Dunning

Ben has dedicated significant effort to support Onslow Sport by spearheading various sports programs and new initiatives, such as:

Establishment and leadership of a Sports Council.

Collaboration in the introduction of a competition where students could design a new sports uniform. The creation and management of Onslow’s sports-oriented Instagram pages, effectively promoting upcoming games and encouraging school support.

The revival of the Staff vs. Year 13 competition, fostering buy-in from both staff and students. Ben has been an integral part in facilitating the school's responsiveness to the voices of rangatahi, resulting in positive changes within the sports environment, exemplified at the recent School Sports Awards.
